Staffordshire-inspired Pitcher in Avocado

Each one is a story.

Inspired by motifs and the stories of Staffordshire factory ware. From an era in England where, paradoxically, the materials for pottery production were plentiful and those in charge flourished, while a great deal of the factory workers, many women and children, suffered from the toxic working environments and taxing labor of it all. Northern England is still living in the aftermath of what basically speaks to the false promises and failures of capitalism. I like to think of my work as addressing that moment in time when the machine took over the hand of the artisan, and the industrial world was born. Potters largely focus on keeping traditions of the handmade in the home and in our lives. I am a part of this tradition but I also like to think of the choices and decisions that people have made over time that have gotten us here. In short, I am interested in the politics of how contemporary potters consider their work in the face of a culture that tries to eliminate the value of a meaningful material culture from our lives completely.
